Practical
Experiences of Integrating the Steel Supply Chain |
 |
 |
|
Richard
McWilliams, Whitby Bird & Partners |
|
Whitby Bird & Partners have been exchanging 3D steelwork models with
Severfield-Rowen for more than five years. Richard reviewed the teams’
capabilities, giving a practical view on the experiences gained over time,
including an outline of the 'next phase' of integration - including the
incorporation of more detailed information, cross platform working and
closer working with Corus.

One: MOPMIT - More Productive Minor Construction through IT |
 |
|
WS Atkins
Lloyds TSB Group plc
Whitbread plc
University of Salford
|
| The
MOPMIT is a research project being driven by a group of major clients, which
concerns the myriad of small construction projects that make up well over
50% of construction activity in the UK. The project aims to demonstrate
how simple and inexpensive IT and communications tools can lead to greatly
enhanced effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of minor construction
projects. |

Session Two: Managing Project Information - A Case Study
|
 |
|
Steve
Pittard, Elstree Computing Ltd. |
| Steve presented a system currently
in use on a major construction project and demonstrated how technology
can be employed to control project information and associated procedures. |

ProCure is a EU funded project
whose goal is to take a significant but achievable step forward in the
application of available ICT to the Large Scale Engineering (LSE) construction
industry.
e-Construct
is another EU funded project to build faster, cheaper and better, by developing,
demonstrating and disseminating a new Communication Technology that will
better support the needs of the European Building and Construction industry.
This
session discussed the successes and challenges of these projects.

| Jeff presented the ePlansChecking
system prototype that automates the checking of submitted plans against
building regulations. The ePlansChecking system is a key component of the
Construction and Real Estate Network (CORENET) programme - a major investment
in developing and applying advanced information technologies within the
Singapore building construction industry. The presentation included an outline
of the development of the system together with a demonstration of the prototype
system in action. |

Supply
Chain Collaborative Working - The Key Principles |
 |
|
Dr Neil Jarrett, Warwick University |
| Warwick University have been
working to transfer manufacturing practices for collaborative working to
construction. The principles
and processes are still poorly understood and therefore not well applied.
Neil presented the key principles through several case studies of what tends
to go well and what goes badly in construction. The key principles include
supplier selection, appointment and management for long-term relations,
integrated design, planning and costing, performance measurement and continuous
improvement, and managing change. |
