Intelligent Environments

Stephen Hope
  Stephen Hope, Orange Communications

A sustainable city will require a telecommunications and information infrastructure that is able to deliver intelligent services for the management of buildings and to aid citizens. Stephen will explore how modern mobile communication and information systems can be exploited to aid the management of buildings and the support of people within a modern city.

17:15 Manufacturers e-working together within an integrated supply chain (Metis) James Nyambayo
  Dr. James Nyambayo, BRE
Metis is a DTI funded project that is being led by BRE and BCSA and aims to adapt and transfer technologies for electronic exchange of technical data and supply chain information from automotive and aerospace industries to engineering firms producing steel structures for the construction industry. James will present the project that has developed a web-based platform for e-collaboration of the constructional steelwork sector's supply chain.

Improved job management and build supply delivery to an SME mobile work force

Andy Cornaby

Andy Cornaby, MD, Response Maintenance & Building Services

Response Maintenance & Building Services, winners of the National Mobile & Wireless Technology Innovation Award for 2003, have transformed a traditional manual labour business by improving job management and build supply delivery to a mobile work force. Andy will discus how cost and productivity improvements, delivering an estimated 12 month Return on Investment, and the competitive edge of improved customer responsiveness have been enabled through the use of in-cab PDAs with always-on GPRS connections.

09:30 Improving business through mobile technology Sarah Bowden
  Sarah Bowden, Arup
COMIT (Construction Opportunities for Mobile IT) is a two-year research and development project part-funded by the DTI 'Partners in Innovation Scheme'. Led by Arup, in partnership with BSRIA and Loughborough University, the project aims to facilitate the realisation of business benefits from the adoption of mobile information and communication technologies. Sarah will present through case studies, detailed factual business benefits, barriers, successes and failures.

10:15 Practical application and integration of Barcode and RFID technology Ron Manning
  Ron Manning, Tag-all.com

Ron will initially present a briefing and taster of the practical application of Barcodes and RFID applied into the commerce and how electronic exchange standards can be used with this information to enhance the core elements of project tracking and tracing. He will then discuss getting more out of simpler mobile devices of how it is possible to use basic 'scan and record' principles to collect sophisticated hierarchical (directory like) information and how this allows a broad range of barcodes and RFID devices to contribute to data needs in the construction industry.

11:00 Tea and Coffee

11:20 Panel discussion on e-working
  Panel:
    Speakers:
    Graham Popple, BT Graham Popple
Zoe Turnbull, Shepherd Construction Zoe Turnbull
Stuart Kenny, Liquid Knowledge Stuart Kenny

Prof. Peter James, SustainIT Peter James
Graham will discuss the current and future trends in communications and mobile technologies along with their application both within and out of sector. Zoe will present an industry perspective by discussing Shepherd Construction's experience in their current adoption of wireless and mobile technologies along with their future strategy. Stuart will discuss and demonstrate, from an SME's business perspective, the practical application of such technologies as wireless networks, satellite, wireless and cable broadband, mobile devices such as phones and XDAs, remote access software, intranets and extranets. These systems and tools are integrated to facilitate communications, centralised information sharing and collaboration facilitating both localised and remote access through multiple interfaces whilst also providing remote access for systems administration and support. SustainIT is an initiative of UK CEED (UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development), a not-for-profit research centre that conducts research on, and provides best practice examples of, synergies between ICT and sustainable development. Being a leading authority, Peter will discuss the economic, environmental and social aspects of e-working.

14:15 START: Safety through automated and robotic technologies John Riehl
  John Riehl, START
This DTI funded programme commenced in January 2003 with the core objective of delivering improved project and business performance through the use of ICT to support collaborative working. The programme aims to use the substantial body of existing research and project-based experience to devise a series of support mechanisms for live projects. It will use a business led approach to enable many tools and practices that have been developed through research but not made any substantial impact, to be diffused into widespread practice. The project team will present the programme's route map, business case and status of the live projects.

15:00 Transparent and consistent information through digital pen and paper Iain McNab
  Iain McNab, Taylor Woodrow

Taylor Woodrow is trialling a digital pen and paper system. Iain will discuss the adoption and trialling of this technology by workers on the Glasgow Harbour project to perform a variety of functions including recording minutes of meetings, tracking and logging customer requests, sending emails and snagging. Although in the early stage, the main advantage is the transparency and consistency of the information sent, which in turn should avoid duplication.
