IT: The Way Forward
|
 |
| |
Prof.
Matthew Bacon, Director of Construct IT |
|
Over recent months effort has been
focused on the future for Construct IT. A variety of discussions have
taken place resulting the formulation of a proposed way forward. This

Knowledge-Based
Decision Support in Integrated Design and Project Management |
 |
| |
Prof.
Joseph Tah, University of Salford |
| Joe will present the results of
his work on the development of integrated CAD and project management software
environments using enterprise application integration and knowledge-based
decision support techniques. He will discuss object-oriented knowledge representation
and reasoning techniques, software agents, the analysis and management of
project risks and the need to further exploit multi-agent systems techniques
for the modelling and simulation of construction supply networks in the
future. |

Bullring Project: Collaboration
in Retail Regeneration
|
|
| |
Bill
Ives, Hammerson
|
 |
|
The recently opened
Bullring project, developed by the Birmingham Alliance, is a core part
of Europe's largest city centre phased retail regeneration project in
the city of Birmingham and was completed at a cost of £500 million.
Bill will discuss how this large-scale project has taken a leading edge
approach in supporting collaborative working at the upstream 'pre-handover'
stages and how the information/knowledge generated at the upstream phases
will facilitate the down-stream 'operation' phases.

EU Framework Programme (FP6) and the HOLMES Project |
 |
| |
Prof.
Rod Howes, Council member of ECCREDI |
| FP6 is the
main instrument for the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA)
by forging partnership with Europe's best researchers. Farzad will present
the key issues relating to FP6, some experience of consortium building and
the details of an elaborate form of consortium management structure. The
proposal led by the University of Salford under the acronym of HOLMES, the
only construction related FP6 proposal throughout the whole of Europe that
has progressed through to the final shortlist evaluation stage, will also
be outlined. |

Internet
Protocol (IP) Telephony in Construction |
 |
| |
Sebastien
Beyh, University of Salford |
|
Sebastien
will present a brief overview on IP Telephony technology with emphasis
on its benefits such as improving construction teams collaboration and
reducing cost. He discuss the status of use of such a technology within
the UK construction industry and will further introduce the Internet Protocol
Telephony on Construction Sites (IPTCS) Framework. Sebastien will provide
a live demonstration of an IP Phone call generated through a PC based
dialer which could be integrated into mobile computing devices commonly
used by construction teams.

Delivering
Improved Performance through ICT Enabled Collaborative Working |
 |
| |
Paul
Waskett, Adept Management |
| This
DTI funded programme commenced in January 2003 with the core objective of
delivering improved project and business performance through the use of
ICT to support collaborative working. The programme aims to use the substantial
body of existing research and project-based experience to devise a series
of support mechanisms for live projects. It will use a business led approach
to enable many tools and practices that have been developed through research
but not made any substantial impact, to be diffused into widespread practice.
The project team will present the programme's route map, business case and
status of the live projects. |

Feedbackfeedforward:
Insights to Design, Build and FM Collaborative Working |
 |
| |
Martin
Brown, Mowlem Aqumen |
|
Integration and collaboration within
and across the design, construct and facilities management sectors is
seen as the key to success of collaborative working forms of contracts.
These sectors may, or may not, have the necessary culture, approaches
or systems and applications in place to truly integrate and collaborate.
Martin will focus on the recent Feedbackfeedforward project between 'be'
and the 'cfm' looking at the latest insights to design, build and fm collaborative
working.
