Phil
and Michael discussed through the experience of BT how supply chain is
now becoming a key area of potential cost management and business performance
improvement, providing tangible contributions to a companies profits.
Bashir then introduced and provided an overview on their Consortium of
SMEs project, which requires the input of main contractors and Local Authorities
who can benefit from utilizing Local Supply Chains on their Regeneration
and New Build projects. Also, how Local SMEs are developing and sustaining
their business, based on a Common Consortium IT System, targeting a radical
breakthrough from the current 'Main Contractor 2 Sub-Contractor' model.

Facilitating
'Lean' Business with Smart Processes through Technology |
 |
| |
Kevin
Thistlethwaite, Mott MacDonald |
| Many
companies now have their ICT strategy as a core business issue and reflect
this by having Chief Technology Offices, (CTO) on the board. This position
is not universal in all sectors, particularly those that may consider themselves
not to be information based or led. However, in the drive to be more effective
and efficient, the creation of 'Lean' business with smart processes invariably
relies on a technology underpinning. Drawing on a diverse set of sectors
Kevin compared and contrasted what is possible and where the future might
lie in both construction and wider service provision. |

IT Thinking & Implementation - IT or Business Led? |
 |
| |
Alister
Coombe, Atomic Weapons Establishment |
| Alister
provided a review of how IT systems are being developed and implemented
to support a facilities development programme of work at AWE. This focused
on how the IT strategy has evolved to address design and construction of
these facilities, and discussed the challenges created by a large supply
chain. This was presented from a business user's perspective, and examples
were provided from the current ongoing programme, to identify key issues
that have been identified and addressed, together with lessons learnt to
date. |
