The Basingstoke Project

Mervyn presented the fully engineered 3D model of the Basingstoke project, which was put together with the designer's information for clash detection, design integration and visualisation. Engineering information from trade contractors was also brought into the model. All the information was accessible via a project intranet.

11:30 Session Two: RICS Building Cost Information Service Online - Internet and Beyond Ian Pegg
  Ian Pegg, Technical Director, BCIS Ltd
Within this session Ian combined a demonstration of the BCIS Online service together with observations on the technological path taken. Since the launch in April 2000 of an Internet version of the long-standing BCIS Online service it has become even easier to access and apply BCIS information. Development has continued over the first 18 months, which extend the scope of the service and offer greater integration with other applications.

The project team presented the EU funded research project, eLEGAL, whose goal is to define a framework for legal conditions and contracts regarding the use of ICT in project business. The expected key results from this project are:

  • User requirements for legal support in construction projects.
  • Library of re-usable clauses and model contracts.
  • Contract configuration and negotiation tools.
  • Simulated contract negotiation game.
  • Recommendations to standardisation.

14:30 Construction processes: How does the UK compare with its Continental partners? John Goodall
  John Goodall, FIEC
FIEC is the European federation of contractors. John compared the performance of the UK Construction Industry against EU. He addressed insurance as well as supply chain issues. Finally John discussed FIEC’s efforts in promoting IT in the construction industry and potential collaboration with Construct IT.  
     
15:15 The role of IT in Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning in construction KILCON

The project team presented the findings of a two-year project, KILCON, which is investigating the role of IT in Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning in construction. Peter Morris is an ex-Bovis Commercial Director and is currently a professor at UMIST.
